UConn Lingo

The UConn campus is like a small city, buzzing with energy. You will soon find yourself in the hub of collegiate excitement. As a new UConn student, you may feel as if you’ve stepped in to a whole new world. We’ve compiled a list of popular University catch phrases to help you learn to speak like a true Husky. Welcome to the University of Connecticut!

 

Catalog: An annual publication that contains UConn course descriptions and requirements for majors and minors, as well as the University’s individual Schools and Colleges. 

Community Assistant - CA: See Resident Assistant.

Co-op: The University bookstore.

Course Tools: Many instructors use this system to post homework assignments or review materials or online quizzes. It’s also a great way for you to communicate with other students from your class.

Daily Campus: UConn’s student newspaper. Pick up your copy each weekday  morning at a variety of locations across campus. You can also visit them online.

Dairy Bar: The University’s beloved ice cream shop. The Dairy Bar makes their own ice cream and dairy products and is a popular meeting spot for UConn students, faculty and members of the surrounding community.

FAFSA: Free Application for Federal Student Aid. You must complete the FAFSA to receive financial aid at UConn. For more information, visit the Office of Financial Aid website.

FERPA: Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act. This act outlines your rights with regards to your educational records. Click here for more information.

First Night: An annual pep rally held in Gampel Pavilion to kick-off the first official practice of the men’s and women's basketball teams. 

Flex Pass: Flex passes come with Dining Services meal plan options. They can be used for guest meals or applied toward value meals at Dining Service’s fast food Grab & Go locations. Your value meal can be a combination of a sandwiches or pizza, fruit and a beverage. Additional choices are available.

Full-Time Student: A student enrolled for 12 or more credits.

FYE (First Year Experience) Classes: Courses that help you make a smooth transition from high school to University life.

Hot Seats: Specially priced tickets for selected shows and events at Jorgensen Center for the Performing Arts. Full-time UConn students can purchase these inexpensive tickets on the day of the performance for most Friday and Saturday shows.

Huskymania: The word "Huskymania" describes our athletic enthusiasm and unifying source of pride for our top-ranked Division I varsity sports.

Husky Helpers: Students, professors, administrators and staff members who demonstrate the welcoming UConn spirit each August by volunteering their time to direct you as you move into your residence hall room. 

Homer: The name of the UConn library’s searchable catalog. The catalog and library are named for Homer Babbidge, a former University president.

HuskyTech (formerly ResNet): Provides computer network connections for on-campus students and general computer support to all students.

Husky Vision: The University’s campus cable network.

Midnight Breakfast: A fun tradition where University faculty and staff prepare and serve late-night breakfast treats as a study break for students preparing for the beginning of final exams.

Points: Points come with some of the Dining Services meal plan options. They allow you to charge a-la-carte food purchases to supplement your selected meal plan. À la carte food includes coffee, sandwiches or other small items that can be purchased at Grab & Go locations, on-campus cafes or other University dining areas.

Resident Assistant- RA (formerly Community Assistant - CA):  Your RA is a student staff member trained to assist you with living in on-campus housing. RAs help students work together to maintain a safe and comfortable living environment.

SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average): An average of your final course grades for all classes taken in a semester.

Student Administration System: This tool allows you to register for classes, access your course schedule and view your grades. 

SUBOG (Student Union Board of Governors): One of the largest student organizations on campus.  SUBOG sponsors many fun concerts, programs and events on campus.

TA (Teaching Assistant): A graduate student who assists a professor during class instruction. TAs may also teach courses, or lead discussion or lab sessions for lecture classes.

Textbooks To Go: A convenient service offered by the UConn Co-op bookstore that gathers all the textbooks you’ll need for the fall semester. Students who enroll in the program can pickup up their packaged textbooks when they arrive on campus.

TGPA (Total Grade Point Average): An average of your grades for all courses taken at UConn.

UConnect: The University’s on-campus telephone service provider. 

USG: Undergraduate Student Government.

WHUS: UConn’s campus radio station (91.7 FM).
