Health Insurance Coverage
The University requires all full-time students to maintain health insurance coverage for protection in the event of accident or illness. You must be covered by one of the following: a personal insurance policy, a plan carried by your parents or the University-sponsored Student Health Insurance Plan.
UConn uses what is called a hard waiver system to verify health coverage for students. Under this system, you are automatically charged for the Student Health Insurance Plan. If you already have insurance coverage and wish to decline the University plan, you can request a waiver via UConn’s Student Administration System.
A waiver is granted only if another form of insurance coverage is in effect. If you do not request a waiver, it will be assumed that you accept the coverage offered under the Student Health Insurance Plan. Students who are currently covered by an HMO or PPO should review their current plan’s coverage rules before declining the Student Health Insurance Plan. Your plan may provide no, or limited, coverage outside of your home area. Also, in order to decline the Student Health Insurance Plan your personal insurance coverage must meet or exceed the coverage that the Student Health Insurance Plan provides.
Students may request health insurance waivers from June 1 - September 15, 2009. Insurance charges cannot be waived after September 15.
